Student Work--Intro to Fibers Non-BFA

As an Instructor of Record for the Fibers and Material Studies Department at Tyler School of Art, I was charged with creating and implementing a curriculum that introduced traditional fiber techniques to non-art students.  While sampling and utilizing over fifteen techniques over the course of three major projects and out-of-class assignments, I helped my students foster their critical thinking processes by invoking their natural curiosity and exploration with a variety of outcomes.  The students navigated through their understanding of abstraction, color and content with the creation of a nature-based tapestry.  Secondly, we discovered traditional surface design techniques and soft sculpture construction (MX cold water dye techniques, monoprints, image transfer, and embroidery) to create pieces that reached beyond didactic subject matter for emotionally charged works of art.  Finally, students discovered how to maximize their creativity with limited materials—one single object (repeated) and one method of joining to create unique sculptures.   Throughout the course I encouraged students to apply their new creative processes to their own career paths with the understanding that one creative thought can make all the difference.
